Scrutiny:
Dolling, 2011, Laporte described the genus Spartocera simultaneously with its subgenus Menenotus but mentioned only one species: Spartocera (Menenotus) lunatus Laporte. It can be argued that the genus Spartocera is monobasic and has the same type species as the subgenus Menenotus. That seems absurd: Laporte clearly excluded lunatus from the nominate subgenus, leaving it without any included species. The next reviser was Burmeister, 1835, who changed the spelling to Spartocerus and included four species. He indicated that he considered his section Ba to be equivalent to Laporte’s Spartocera, placing two species in it: geniculatus ‘Klug’ and lunatus. Section Ba was in turn divided into two sections, a and ß, with ß indicated as equivalent to Laporte’s subgenus Menenotus. It follows that geniculatus is the first species to be placed in the nominate subgenus (a) Spartocera and is its type species by subsequent monotypy. That is the situation catalogued by Kirkaldy, 1901c: 219 and accepted by Packauskas.
Dolling, 2011, Coreus confluentus is currently placed in the genus Sagotylus (Acanthocerini) but has been interpreted by some authors, including Stål, 1870 and Bergroth, 1913d, as referring to a species of Spartocera.
Type species:
Spartocerus geniculatus
Burmeister (=
Spartocera fusca
), by subsequent monotypy
The first family-group name based on this genus is Spartocérides.
